Basic Fire Awareness: What Training Points Are Covered?

Ace Fire & Security • 17 October 2023

Just like our homes, our offices and working environments are also vulnerable to the onset of fire. Installations of electrical equipment alongside kitchen appliances and supplies of flammable materials can create a hazardous space in which fire can spread quickly. This is especially true in multi storey buildings or shared office spaces.

As such, it is incredibly important for all members of staff to undergo official fire safety training. Often this is in the form of a basic fire awareness course, where this typically covers how to assess risks and respond to fires in an emergency situation. Read on to learn more about what tends to be included in a basic fire awareness training session.

Causes Of Fires

One of the most important aspects of fire safety training is understanding how fires are caused and then how they are encouraged to spread. Causes could include electrical faults or mismanagement of appliances, where an incorrect handling of waste and paper resources can also cause fires to grow.

Different Fire Types

In order to instruct staff on how to manage a fire, it is essential to initially explain the different types of fire they may encounter. Often we think of fires as the burning of flammable materials like paper or furniture, but other types could be electrical or oil based, where these need to be handled in a precise manner.

Dangers Of Smoke & Fire

Although the dangers associated with fire may seem obvious, it is important for staff to have a basic understanding of how their health could be threatened in an emergency situation. In addition to the risk of burns, other dangers such as smoke inhalation and eye irritation should be discussed.

Using Fire Safety Equipment

Another key aspect of basic fire awareness is understanding how to use fire safety equipment properly. This includes the handling of extinguishers and blankets, in addition to making sure that sprinkler systems and alarms are properly maintained.

Fire Prevention

The best fire safety advice is always about prevention. This will serve as a reminder to staff to make sure that electrical appliances are properly inspected and maintained, where appliances should always be switched off properly when the building is vacated. Proper use of fire doors should also be stressed.
