Fire Safety in the Office: What You Need

Ace Fire And Security Equipment • 13 March 2020
In any workplace, there needs to be safety protocols in place – fire safety is an extremely important part of this. Whether you run a store, factory or have an office, you need to be aware of the fire regulations in your area. It’s essential that you plan out an emergency route and instruct your staff on any safety procedures.

Exit Signs and Doors
Every business needs to have fire exits, which should be clearly marked. It’s not enough just to have them, you also have to leave the area clear so people can use the exits if necessary. Avoid having boxes or plants set up near the doors, so there is always a clear, easy to see escape route.
You should periodically check that there is nothing blocking the way, inside or out. You should also check that doors open easily.

Smoke Alarms
It’s paramount that you have smoke alarms throughout the building. These will be your first warning of a fire in most cases, so ensure that they are functioning and change the batteries every six months. You should also test them at this point.
You are better off being overly careful than not taking enough care, which is where smoke alarms become a priority tool in your fire safety arsenal. You may wish to look for those that offer carbon monoxide alarms in the same unit.

Fire Extinguisher
Every office should have at least one fire extinguisher, though multiples are preferable. These can be set up at strategic locations throughout the business and you should ensure that all your employees not only know where they are, but how to use them.
Again, fire extinguishers should be up to regulation and examined on a regular basis. You will also need to replace them as the older ones become obsolete.

Fire Drills
You’ll want to ensure that all new employees know that there will be regular fire drills to practice just how well your staff respond. They should know exactly where to go and how to react if there is a fire. By training repeatedly, you ensure that they will be safe in the event of a fire.
Of course, if the first is very small, then people can use the extinguishers to put the fire out. However, they should be aware that if the fire is too large, they should simply leave, using one of the exit routes that have been practiced.
Even if you have done your best to prevent a fire from breaking out, it can happen. It’s a good idea to be as prepared as possible. If you need a little extra help in this area, consider calling Ace Fire & Security to learn more about fire safety options.
