While a church is a place of worship, it’s far more than that. Most churches serve as an office for at least one person, a meeting place throughout the week, and may offer additional services, such as youth group gatherings and even child care.
With so many people coming and going, it’s very important to reduce fire risks wherever possible. Here’s how to do that.
Your fire alarms must be functional at all times if they’re going to protect your building. The alarms should be tested at least every six months. You need to replace the batteries when needed, too. Be sure to check carbon monoxide detectors at the same time and any other fire-related systems, such as sprinklers.
Many times, church services use candles and these can be quite dangerous. Lighting a candle and using it in a ceremony may be necessary, but you should be very careful. It’s important to have water or a fire extinguisher nearby in case there’s an emergency. Wherever possible, use battery operated candles instead.
The main cause of fires in places of worship is electrical. Many churches are in older buildings and have not been updated to today’s standards. Ideally, if the church is over 30 years old, you should have the wiring replaced. However, regular electrical inspections are also a good idea to prevent possible problems.
Take care to avoid overloading electrical outlets with extension cords. You should also keep flammable items away from electrical outlets.
It’s a good idea to have a fire extinguisher placed in every space throughout the church. It should be easily accessible and should be clearly marked.
Fire exits must be marked clearly and you should be sure to invest in lighted signs that will be easy to spot through smoke. Likewise, emergency lighting is useful in case the power goes out during a fire.
