Three Types of Domestic Fire and What To Do

Ace Fire And Security Equipment • 18 March 2021

If you fall victim to a domestic house fire, the results can be catastrophic. The potential damage to your home and family can be devastating. House fires don’t always start in the kitchen, however, so you must always remain vigilant to the potential fire safety issues in your home. To help you recognise the different types of fires and how you should fight them, we have created a brief guide. Read on to find our more.

Kitchen Fires

Unsurprisingly, the kitchen is the most common source of domestic fires. As the primary area of the home where heat, open flames and oil are present, this room poses a particular threat. The most common type of kitchen fire is an oil fire. These types of fires often occur because hot oil has been left unattended or water is added to hot oil in a pan by accident. In this circumstance, you should always seek to suffocate the fire by placing a metal lid or another pot on top of the fire. Never use water!

Electrical Fires

As well as the kitchen, another common source of house fires is the internal electrics of the home. Electrical fires occur due to faulty wiring which may short circuit and then spark. Sparks from electrical fires can easily catch on flammable materials like carpets. To prevent an electrical fire, ensure that your appliances work properly and there is no loose wiring in the home.

Smoking & Candle Fires

Smoking is bad for your health, but it can also be catastrophic for your home! If a lit cigarette drops from an ashtray or your hand onto the carpet or curtains, it can easily spread and cause a fire. This is a particularly common occurrence if a homeowner falls asleep when having a cigarette and remains dosing as the fire starts. The same can be said for candles, which can spread if knocked off their shelf and onto a carpet or sofa. If you are a smoker, never smoke indoors to prevent the risk of a house fire. If you own several candles, ensure they are always placed well away from the edge of a surface, especially if they are above a carpet or piece of furniture.
