Tips for Avoiding a ‘Home Alone’ Experience Over the Holidays

Ace Fire & Security • 13 December 2023

With Christmas and New Year around the corner, many people will likely be travelling to visit family and friends over the holiday season. If this is the case for you, then it’s imperative that you keep your home secure while you’re away - after all, you don’t want a Home Alone situation to occur (by that we mean burglars breaking in, not you forgetting a family member - although that is also less than ideal)!

The holiday season is a prime time of year for burglars to break into people’s homes. Make sure they don’t break into yours by following our helpful tips.

Buy a Light Timer

One of the ways you can deter potential burglars is by creating the illusion of your home being occupied, even if it will be empty. An effective way of doing this is to use a light timer. These work by plugging socket powered lights, such as lamps, into the timer and plugging the timer into your wall socket, then setting the timer to come on (thus turning the light on) at certain times.

This makes it look as though someone is home when it’s dark outside, making your house less likely to be targeted for theft.

Keep Social Media Private

As tempting as it may be to post fun and festive pictures and updates on your social media whilst you’re away, it’s best to avoid this until you’re back home, especially if you don’t have private accounts.

If you tell lots of people or advertise on social media that you’re away from your home, then the wrong person could see it and take advantage of it being empty. This is why you should keep your social media private and only tell people you trust if you’ll be away.

Invest in a Burglar Alarm

For the most peace of mind that your home and belongings will be safe while you’re away during the holidays, we suggest you invest in an intruder alarm. Not only do these deter intruders who don’t want to risk setting off the alarm, but should anyone break in then the alarm will sound and your security company will be able to assess the situation before contacting you and the relevant authorities.
