What are the Fire Safety Duties & Responsibilities of a Fire Warden

Ace Fire And Security Equipment • 12 March 2020
The crucial role that fire wardens play in making sure your business is prepared for any kind of fire emergency is of utmost importance and should not be underestimated. Along with an emergency plan, fire wardens are part of important risk control measures to make sure that your workplace is fully prepared should an emergency situation, potentially in this case, a fire, possibly occur. Taking this into consideration, businesses are advised to select their fire wardens carefully.

What is a fire warden?

Essentially, a fire warden’s role is to be the designated person within a department who is allocated responsibilities in order to help support the ongoing management in regards to fire safety, by contributing to the safety of people in the event of a fire evacuation.

The main duties of a fire warden include:

● To offer assistance in relation to implementing and improving effective emergency procedures within a working environment
● To assist in preventing emergencies by monitoring the reliability of the fire risk control measures
● To increase awareness with various other members of staff about the potential risk of hazards that exist within the workplace
● Instructing employees how to respond in an emergency
● Leading the fire drills and real evacuation procedures
● Ensuring that they are familiar with all emergency exits and escape routes and exits from their designated area
● Ensure that all employees are accounted for during the event of an evacuation
● Assist all employees in the workplace should an emergency happen. This includes assisting those with special needs, for example, assisting someone in a wheelchair to evacuate.

Within the event of a fire, a warden will need to:

● Ensure everyone is able to leave the building using all the appropriate routes and exits (this excludes lifts)
● Assess all accessible spaces in the area, including bathrooms, to make sure everyone has evacuated – this should be carried out on your way out of the building so that the fire warden is not putting themselves at risk by re-entering the evacuated area
● Shut the doors to help to isolate any fire
● Guide everyone out to the assembly area and offer assistance in checking that everyone has arrived safely
