Every business should do their best to keep employees and customers as safe as possible in an emergency situation. While the exact signage will depend heavily on what type of business you have and on the hazardous situations within it, there are some basics that should be included in every company building.
If there’s an emergency, people may not be thinking clearly and could find themselves stumbling around as they try to get out of the building. To prevent this, it’s essential that you have signs indicating the best way to leave the building. These should be very obvious, preferably in red or yellow and should clearly mark the exits.
Every outside exit should be clearly highlighted with a sign that is high enough to be visible above any cubicles, displays, or shelving. If the building it complex with hallways and stairs, etc. that must be traversed in order to reach the exit, consider including an evacuation route sign trail to lead everyone out of the building.
Does your building have anything dangerous in it? If so, you’ll want to set up signs to ensure people know what to expect and where to take care. Some common hazard signs include:
Flammable: You may place this sign anywhere flammable items are stored. The simple sign can be used alone, but you may wish to include a no smoking sign or something that specifies what is being warned about, such as flammable liquid, flammable storage, etc.
Toxic: Let people know to stay away or wear proper protection by placing warning signs for toxins, including toxic liquids, toxic gas, and others. Poison signs may also fall under this category.
Explosive: These signs warn people of anything that could be explosive. You may specify by using a sign that lets them know it’s compressed gas, or another specific substance.
Radiation: If there are any radioactive materials in a specific area, you need to ensure that people are made aware by placing the appropriate sign.
Don’t leave anyone guessing about where the fire extinguishers or axes are. Mark these with clear signs that will lead anyone to them if there is a need. You should also add signs for any other emergency equipment, such as first aid kits, defibrillation kits, or other items that may be useful.
Be sure to choose easily visible signage, preferably signs that either glow or light up in order to make it easy to see if there is a power outage or if it is too smoky to clearly make out markers.
