Fire Safety Tips for the Holiday Season
Ace Fire And Security Equipment • 17 December 2020
The colder months often mean that we’re spending much more time indoors and doing what we can to stay cosy. Add in holidays like Christmas and you’ll find that many of us are lighting open fires, adding more candles and stringing up lights to both keep warm and add some festive cheer.
Twinkling fairy lights and open flames do give a magical glow, but it’s important to be extra vigilant when it comes to fire safety. Fire can be devastating for your home or business, so read on for our top fire safety tips for the holiday season.
Hang decorations carefully
Take care when hanging decorations and keep them away from candles, fireplaces, radiators and Christmas lights. If you do want to hang or display decorations on a fireplace or near other heat sources, choose non-flammable materials and make sure they’re fully secured in place.
Check the condition of your lights
Most of us have a box of dusty lights we only bring out once a year, so it’s important to check the condition of your lights before you plug in. Look for any fraying wires, damage to plugs, or gaps in the wire tubing. Always untangle lights carefully too, to reduce the chances of damage.
Unplug and turn off
It might be tempting to leave lights on so there’s a festive glow when you come home, but always switch off indoor and outdoor lights when you’re not at home. Switch plugs off at the mains and unplug from the socket for extra safety - plus you’ll save a fortune on electricity bills.
Candle safety
Always place your candles on a sturdy surface and away from fire hazards like curtains. They should also be placed in an area where they won’t be knocked over or be in the way of people walking past. Always blow candles out when you’re finished and never leave them unattended, even for just a few minutes.
