How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Ace Fire And Security Equipment • 10 November 2020
Fire extinguishers are a legal requirement in the workplace. Those who may have to use them should have received the necessary fire safety training and using the correct fire extinguisher is the most important consideration. If the wrong extinguisher is used it can have caused life-threatening repercussions.

With this in mind, we are going to talk you through the process of using a fire extinguisher.

Using the correct technique
Fire extinguishers should not be used by people who have not been trained. Before tackling a fire with a fire extinguisher make sure you or someone else has raised the fire alarm and that you have a safe evacuation route.

Using the right type of extinguisher for the fire, use the four-step PASS technique.

● Pull: Pull out the pin, this will then break the tamper seal.

● Aim: Aim the extinguisher low, pointing the nozzle or hose towards the bottom of the fire. Do not touch the horn on a CO2 extinguisher, it gets extremely cold and can damage your skin.

● Squeeze: Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.

● Sweep: Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire, the fuel source, until the fire has gone out. Lots of people put out small fires very safely and easily. However, serious harm or an injury can happen by tackling a fire which is beyond your capabilities. Only tackle a fire in its very early stages and always make sure you put your own and other people's safety first.

If you are unable to put out the fire or if the extinguisher becomes empty, evacuate the premises yourself and make sure everyone in the building immediately, closing all doors behind you as you go and make sure the fire brigade has been called.

If there is the slightest concern or uncertainty about tackling the fire, evacuate the building immediately and call the fire brigade as they will be able to handle the situation appropriately on your behalf.
