Stop, Drop And Roll Guide

19 March 2024

Fire safety should be treated with the utmost importance, and it is vital to know what to do in the event of a fire. While knowing where to evacuate and how to use a fire extinguisher, sometimes lessons about what to do when actually on fire are neglected. One such technique is to stop, drop and roll.

Here is a quick guide to the stop, drop and roll fire safety technique if you find yourself on fire.

Stop

The first step of the technique is to STOP. If you find yourself with flames on you, you need to stop all movement. Waving your arms, running about or any other form of movement at this point might fan the flames, stop others' attempts to help or spread the fire about even more.

Drop

Next, you must DROP. This one is fairly simple, you just need to drop to the ground, lying down if possible. It is important to try and cover your face with your hands if possible to avoid facial injury.

Roll

Finally, you ROLL. You must roll around on the ground as quickly as possible to deprive the flame of oxygen and overall extinguish it. If there is something like a rug around, try to roll it around yourself to further extinguish the flame. From this point, others can assist you with removing the flames, such as using a fire extinguisher or wrapping you in a fire-safety blanket.

Other Fire-Combat Techniques

A key way to fight fires is by using fire extinguishers. However, you must first identify which type of fire extinguisher you have, as different types are suited for different types of fire. Your building will probably have the correct type of fire extinguisher for fires you might encounter in that space, but you should always check before you use it. The main types of fire extinguishers are water, foam, CO2, powder, water mist and wet chemicals.

Another way to combat a fire is by the use of a fire blanket. This is a great way to smother flames, as it will starve the oxygen. They are best used in the case of small fires, where they can smother them easily.
