When you need to use a fire extinguisher, sometimes you don’t have time to think carefully about whether which one you’re using is the correct type. Here at Ace Fire & Security, we believe everybody should know the correct types of extinguishers so they can use them safely in a fire.
Here is a quick reference guide to fire extinguisher types and the different classes of fire they can deal with.
Water extinguishers should only be used on Class A fires, which consist of solid combustibles, such as paper, wood and textiles.
Water mist extinguishers are fairly versatile, as they can be used on Class A, B, C, E and F fires. You should only not use them on Class D fires, which consist of flammable metals.
A CO2 extinguisher should be used on Class B and E fires. Class B fires consist of flammable liquids, while Class E is electrical fires.
You should use a powder extinguisher when working with Class A, B, C and E fires. Class C fires consist of flammable gases such as propane and hydrogen
A wet chemical extinguisher can sometimes be used on Class A and B fires, but should mostly be used on Class F fires, which are fires caused by cooking oil.
A foam extinguisher is suitable for use on Class A and B fires, which as mentioned before are solid combustibles and flammable liquids.
